They represent the departed souls returning back. There names are written on the heads of the skulls. They are most commonly placed on gravestones and ofrendas to honor the return of spirits.Although it is a holiday from far away in southern Mexico, it’s a holiday one can personalize and integrate into their own religious and cultural beliefs. It is more of a cultural holiday than a religious one.

The day of the dead is a very special day for many reasons. It's a day that our love ones that have passed on to a better life can come visit us from the land of the dead. In order for them to come visit us we have to do a process of things. A very important part of the process is making the ofrenda. An ofrenda translates to an altar. This altar contains many elements that have such a deep significant. Think of the ofrenda as a train and all the other elements are the wheels, gasoline, motor, etc. An ofrenda contains of a series off things for example candles, a flower called Cempasuchil, our loved ones favorite food, a cup of water, a picture of our loved ones. The candle is to help them see their path to us. The cp of water and their favorite food is so they don't get thirty o hungry on their way to us and when they get to their destination, the picture is so they and we know for who the ofrenda is for. Last but not least, Cempasuchil is believed that the petals from that flower light up and guide our people to us and let us be with them one last time until next year's visit.
